How are penalty cards given in a regulation soccer match?

Basically I just need to know how and why you are given a yellow or red card in a soccer match

This is kind of complicated, but here are (according to my 2005 FIFA Rulebook) why yellow/ red cards are given:

YELLOW
1.Unsporting Behavior
2. Dissent (Arguing w/ref)
3.Persistent Infringement (committing many fouls)
4.Delaying the Game
5.Fails to respect 10 yards on kick
6.Enters field w/o permission
7.Leaves field w/o permission (except as part of normal play)

RED
1.Violent Tackle
2.Violent Conduct (fighting)
3.Spitting on someone
4.Preventing a goal by handling (except the GK)
5.Preventing an OBVIOUS goal scoring opportunity by committing a foul
6.Using offensive language/racial slurs
7.Two yellow card offenses

Hopefully that clears things up a bit, although these calls are made at the referee's discretion.
